For families with children, East Iceland can be a wonderfull place to visit. In this corner of Iceland you can enjoy everything from beautiful easy hikes, animals and birds, kayaksailing, horse riding and mountainbike tours. The Icelandic swimmingpools are also very good and there is one in almost every town.

Hiking in East Iceland
East Iceland offers some of the Icelands best hiking trails. Guided tours are available both with one of many hiking clubs in East Iceland og with our experienced tour -operators. The hiking clubs offer :  The 5 Mountains of Fjarðabyggð by Ferðafélag Fjarðamanna, The Pearls of Fljótsdalshérað by Ferðafélag Fljótsdalhéraðs and The 7 Mountains of Seyðisfjörður by Gönguklúbbur Seyðisfjarðar. Other great daytours are the Þerribjörg and the Stórurð-Dyrfjöll hike, probably among the most fasinating daytours you can experience.
Longer trails include the magnificent  hut-to-hut Snæfell - Lónsöræfi, edge of Vatnajökul National Park trail and Víknaslóðir coastal trail.

Hikingmaps are availble at tourist information centers and the hiking-club webs. Always remember to check the weather and  inform about where you are going and how long you will hike, either on an informationcenter or at farm/ town nearest to you.

History and culture
East Iceland is rich of history and culture from early seattlment to newer days. In almost every fjord or small town, even in the Highlands the history reveals itself either in the form of museum, sites or centers. Even the fjords have theire individual history. You can endulge yourself with a trip through history when you drive East Iceland.
